"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world."
- James 1:27
Spirit of Adoption Alberta was established in 2012 in support of providing financial aid to Alberta Adoptive Families founded on the biblical principal of James 1:27.
"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after widows and orphans in their distress to keep oneself from being polluted by the world."
The opportunity to advocate for financial aid to facilitate Albertans and their adoption journey is a privilege. This team has a deep passion to come along side adoptive families in the process of bringing their sons and daughters home. As co-directors of Spirit of Adoption Alberta as well as adoptive parents themselves, Susan St.Martin and Paige Reigel have the vision to extend financial support to other adoptive families across Alberta.

100% of all funds raised on this page go towards the ABBA Canada fund for Alberta adoption grants.
Preparing to write this update I came across this quote.
“I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” Mother Teresa
To be clear I for one am not throwing this endeavour into the ring with such a highly esteemed woman who for over 45 years, ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying, first throughout India and then in other countries. Let's be clear on that...however, I do think the ripple effect she so eloquently describes is a powerful image that encourages all of us to live a life of impact. She didn't use the word rock or boulder...she carefully chose the word stone. A stone is generally small and seemingly insignificant. In this context of describing skipping a stone across waters she thoughtfully used the image of something small that has the potential to create a much bigger impact. In the world each of us is small and can feel insignificant at times, but much like a skipping stone we too can create a ripple effect.
As we near the end of our first campaign...40 times 40... I want to thank you for casting your stone. Exciting does not give justice to how it has felt to open an email to receive notice that a donation has been received. It feels like Christmas every time! As we near the end of this 40 day challenge it is a wonderful opportunity to thank all of our supporters and remind them of the incredible gift they have given. Every donation regardless of amount is a blessing and will prove to bless an Alberta family on their adoption journey. The stones you are casting will be a ripple in the lives of these families. In faith we move forward with the commitment to release our first grant before Christmas. As our supporters we are thankful for your generosity and look forward to this endeavour rooted in the reality that we cannot do this alone. So thank you to all who are encouraging us wether in contribution of word or donation. Please continue to pass our vision on to others and keep us in prayer as we move forward... and there is always time for more stones to be cast.
It's easy to get overwhelmed by undertaking a task such as fundraising. At first what seems insurmountable can become a reality by breaking down the challenge into smaller pieces.
In our startup of Spirit of Adoption Alberta it has been easy for us to be excited. We recognize that although we hope people catch the vision ,not everyone will be as excited as we are.
In reality we recognize that there are many causes worth contributing to. Every time we turn around it seems like another organization, school, sports team, or cub scout is asking for a donation. A constant inundation of requests. We realize that not everyone will be able to contribute.
We also know that In order to endure and grow we will have to be tested to see if we have what it takes to trust in the long term vision.
The manna is falling... Just slower than we had hoped. Surrounded by a world of instant gratification we thought it would just appear.
Well, we are being tested to trust. Trust in a process... A long term solution, not a quick fix.
The number 40 keeps popping into my head these days and I have been wondering what message I needed to hear.
So I looked it up... What's the significance of the number 40?This is what I found.
"The number 40 holds particular significance in the Bible and refers to a precise number, not just a long period of time. There are at least ten instances in the Old Testament and New Testament where 40 occurs, either in years or days.
E.g; it rained for 40 days and 40 nights, Moses was on the mountain 40 days and 40 nights, the Israelites wandered 40 years, Jesus fasted in the wilderness for 40 days and was seen on the earth for 40 days after His crucifixion.
A 40-something time period, whether days, months, or years is ALWAYS a period of testing, trial, probation, or chastisement (but not judgment) and ends with a period of restoration, revival or renewal."
So I thought it might be a great time to throw out a challenge as we pray these next 40 days leading up to Orphan Sunday and Adoption Awareness Month in November.
If just 40 people would commit to 40 dollars a month and take on one small piece of the challenge.
So 40 days and 40 supporters.. starting today, we are praying that 40 people would commit to a recurring donation of 40 dollars/ month.
The pieces come together.
So I'm challenging you to take a piece and call it your own.
Check back November 13 for an update...
Thank you in advance for your support!

We wanted to share some exciting media attention that Spirit of Adoption Alberta recently received. Please click the link to read!
I don’t remember the moment I became passionate about adoption. I guess it was always written on my heart...deep in my spirit. We are blessed with three beautiful children. Two born of my tummy...and one born of my heart...all three gifts from God. Each of our children is a messenger from God...teaching us, challenging us, and encouraging us to be all that we were created to be. Our adoption journey from the start was marked by fingerprints of God, and a time in life that brought a new understanding of God’s love, and my ultimate need for Him.The blessing could have ended with our little family, but God had another plan. Recently my heart was tugged to “start a foundation” which at first thought seemed rather daunting. Not knowing where exactly to start, I contacted Wendy at Christian Adoption Services and shared the vision with her, which led to flying out to Vancouver to the Together for Adoption conference. In the meantime a dear friend in Texas connected me with someone she thought could help...it happened to be Jason Kovacs, the director of ABBA Canada...also a keynote speaker at the conference. At the conference I met with three board members from ABBA and learned all about their vision...I was in awe of how God had prepared this meeting and aligned our visions. Before Vancouver I did not know that ABBA existed but it was becoming clear that the heart of “Spirit of Adoption Alberta” and ABBA Canada were destined to join forces. The conference was a wonderful experience and only strengthened my resolve to continue to pray for God’s direction regarding the foundation. God was in this...His fingerprints were all over it.When I arrived home to Edmonton I barely knew where to start so I met with my pastor and asked for his counsel and support. He encouraged me to pray and reach out to anyone I could think of that might be interested in getting involved. No sooner than getting home from the meeting that day I had an e-mail confirming my resolve to move forward. The message was from an Edmonton woman named Paige Riegel. A surgeon’s wife...like me...an adoptive parent...like me...a Christian... like me...and passionate about adoption...like me. She had contacted Wendy from Christian Adoption Services to inquire about starting a grant for adoptive families...like me! Having never met, we exchanged visions and again realized how incredible it was that God had arranged this meeting. With so many things falling into place.... it has become clear to us that we need to follow His lead, take hold of His Hand, and see where His fingerprints take us...
Isaiah 30:21“And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.” (ESV)
I am so excited to be working with a friend on a new endeavour. God's hand was on this project long before we ever even knew where it would go.
I am not going to say too much about Spirit of Adoption Alberta yet, as it is not quite off the ground and won't be for a few more months. I will have much more information soon...
I have learned that God's plans are sometimes much bigger than ours and when He has his hand on something, everything will fall into place in amazing ways. We are excited to see where all of this will lead and how it will branch out in many different ways.
Proverbs 19:21Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails.
I called Christian Adoption Services (in Alberta) a couple of months ago to ask how I could set up an adoption grant for those who feel led to adopt, but can't afford the cost. Wendy told me that she had received a call from another woman in Edmonton the week before with the same question, a woman who already had some ideas on how to go about doing this. Wendy suggested that we meet and possibly work together to set up an organization to raise funds for adoption grants as well as financially supporting Christian Adoption Services, so that, like many other adoption agencies, their doors will not have to close.
I met with Susan and we were shocked how our visions aligned, as well as our personal lives. We have many things in common. We are both married to surgeons. We both have biological children. We both have adopted children. We are both Christians. We both have a passion for orphans. We both love adoption. And we both just want to do more...
As soon as our website is up I will post more about what we will be offering and how others can help out. I will also post about how those that feel God's call to adopt, CAN, if financial support is needed and what that process will entail.
Meanwhile, you can pray that the rest of our plans will fall into place and that throughout this process we will hear God's voice clearly and obey what he asks of us.
Philippians 4:19And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.
